Moscow :   Moscow houses types

Pre-revolutionary Building

Pre-revolutionary buildings are our favorite type of residence in Moscow. Built in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, before the October revolution of 1917, they are situated in the historical center of the city. These houses stand out because of their fine architecture, beautiful facades and grand antique entrances. Apartments usually feature up to 4-meter high ceilings with original moldings, and spacious rooms with large windows. Some apartments may even have working fireplaces. Choosing an apartment in a pre-Revolutionary house offers the best of old Moscow character.

Mansions Charming Moscow mansions are smaller pre-Revolutionary houses that were once private residences of wealthy Muscovites. Usually no more than 4 stories high and often without elevators, these buildings with fascinating architecture and well-kept entrances generally have one or two apartments on each floor. If you are tired of ordinary high-rises with many residents, you will appreciate a peaceful lifestyle in a one of a kind mansion in the center of Moscow.

Stalin period building

Stalin period building The architecture of the Stalin era from the 1930s to the 1950s is primarily found on the main avenues and streets of Moscow such as Tverskaya, Kutuzovsky, Leninsky and Leningradsky prospects. These are monumental concrete houses offering quality accommodation with high ceilings and thick walls. Entrances in such buildings are often small, simple and call for care and upgrade. However, apartments, when refurbished, are spacious and comfortable.

Stalin skyscraper Seven skyscrapers in Moscow, also called the Seven Sisters, are certainly the most outstanding examples of Stalin architecture in its most grandiose sense. Three of the skyscrapers are residential, including one on Kudrinskaya Square by the Zoo, one on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment along the Moskva River, and one on Krasnye Vorota. The other four include two hotels, the Moscow State University, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Breathtaking views, balconies and magnificent entrances will create a very special atmosphere for your home and will definitively impress your visitors. Moreover, if you are new to the city, you will unlikely have trouble finding your way to your new home!

Post-Stalin period building

Post-Stalin period building Built in 1960's -1970's, these houses are scaled down versions of a Stalin type building, with somewhat lower ceilings and smaller apartments. Usually 6 to 8 stories, these concrete structures have plain brick facades and ceilings not higher than 3 meters. The buildings have quality apartments, elevators and regular Moscow entrances.

Block building

Block building Block buildings, or prefabricated housing, can mostly be found outside of the Moscow Garden Ring, in so-called “sleeping areas”. These 12-30-story buildings are symbols of mass construction of the 1970s and 1980s, when simplicity and low cost were the priority. Apartments in such houses have standard layouts, with relatively low ceilings and plain rooms. These block buildings are a great alternative for those interested in an affordable accommodation.

Ministerial building Ministerial buildings are yellow-brick high-rises built for the employees of the various ministries and state organizations in the late 1970s-1980s. These houses offered elite accommodation for the high-level Communist Party and Soviet officials at the time. Apartments were significantly superior to the other types of houses during the Soviet era. They offer large size rooms, spacious halls and kitchens, separate storage rooms and service areas and have more than one bathroom. Moreover, these buildings were designed with greater security in mind, and have concierges, fenced yards and guarded parking. All entrances are spacious, clean and are decorated with carpets and plants.

Modern Development

Modern development Moscow has experienced a surge in construction during the last decade. Among the new developments are today’s elite residential complexes. Built to address all the requirements of a modern house, they usually offer all the possible modern amenities, including underground garages, gyms, swimming pools and even spas. These modern developments are impressive with their elaborate entrances, high level of security, independent infrastructure (heating, phone lines, Internet, etc.), and many apartments are decorated with expensive fixtures and furniture. These are the most luxurious accommodations offered in Moscow today.
